The invention provides a flame-retardant resin composition comprising a matrix resin and dispersed granular flame-retardant particles with a volume-average particle size of about 1 to about 500 nm. Another flame-retardant resin composition comprises a matrix resin and at least flame-retardant particles of about 1 to about 500 nm, wherein the flame-retardant particles are inorganic particles of a hydrated metal compound or inorganic hydrate. A flame-retardant resin molded article is formed from the composition by one or more molding machines selected from compression molding, injection molding, casting, blow molding, extrusion molding and fiber molding machines. A method for preparing the composition comprises mixing at least the matrix resin and flame-retardant particles using one or more kneaders selected from a roller mill, kneader, Banbury mixer, compounder, single-screw extruder and twin-screw extruder.
